What Is Rotary International?
Rotary International is one of the world’s largest humanitarian service organizations, bringing together business leaders, professionals, and community members who share a common commitment to making the world a better place.
Guided by Rotary’s motto, “Service Above Self,” Rotarians dedicate their time, expertise, and resources to improving lives, strengthening communities, and creating lasting impact through service.
Today, Rotary has:
More than 45,000 Rotary Clubs
Approximately 1.4 million members
A presence in over 200 countries and geographical areas worldwide
Rotary is organized into 34 Zones and nearly 540 Districts, each supporting local clubs in delivering meaningful service projects. Rotary Clubs in Myanmar are part of Rotary District 3350, which also includes clubs in Thailand.
The History of Rotary
Rotary was founded on 23 February 1905 in Chicago, Illinois, USA, by Paul Harris, a lawyer who envisioned an organization where professionals could build friendships while serving their communities.
Together with three friends, he established the first Rotary Club. The name “Rotary” originated from the club’s early tradition of rotating meetings among members’ offices.
More than a century later, Rotary has grown into a global network united by friendship, integrity, diversity, and service.
The Object of Rotary
Rotary’s mission is to foster understanding, goodwill, peace, and community development through service. Its objectives are:
To develop meaningful friendships as an opportunity for service.
To uphold high ethical standards in business and professional life.
To encourage every Rotarian to apply the ideal of service in their personal, professional, and community life.
To advance international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a worldwide fellowship of business and professional leaders.
The Four-Way Test
